Story behind the painting:

Growing up in South Africa, I remember wildfires sweeping through the mountains of the Eastern Cape, leaving behind a landscape that looked completely lifeless. The magnificent proteas were consumed by the flames, and all that remained seemed to be ashes.

Yet a few years later, something remarkable would happen. The proteas would return—more beautiful than before. What I didn’t understand then was that the ashes from the fire had enriched the soil, creating the perfect conditions for new life to flourish.

As I reflected on  recent devestating wildfires, those childhood memories came flooding back. Nature has a remarkable way of reminding us that devastation is not always the end of the story.

This painting is a reminder that hope remains. Just as the proteas rise from the ashes, God can bring beauty from our deepest losses, creating new life where we thought nothing beautiful could ever grow again.
